WELCOME TO OUR FITNESS AND SWIM FAMILY

ABOUT THE OWNER OF SOMERSET HEALTH AND FITNESS PTY LTD

Jayne has been awarded the Somerset Citizen of the Year 2022 for her voluntary and working dedication to Somerset region for over 35 years.

I am totally and utterly speechless (that’s a first) and overwhelmed. But I am so grateful.
Today I was announced Somerset Regional Council Citizen of the Year.
Since 1987 I have loved my voluntary work ranging from President of youth clubs, secretary of Kilcoy Community Health Assoc inc, many years with voluntary work with sports and recreation, voluntary work with all the schools in some capacity, meals on wheels, Kilcoy Race Club Inc. for over 15 years, hospitals, churches, fetes and far too many to list. I’ve loved every single minute of it. But mostly I’ve met the most awesome dedicated committees and group and individuals.
Today I stood up there with so many great people – all doing their bit for Somerset and I felt so proud. People who were there today will tell you I was shocked, to say the least at the announcement. But I am so honoured.
Thank you Somerset Regional Council and all the judges.
Well done to all the other winners and nominees. You all rock!!
Thank you Somerset for being my other family.
Jayne McKenzie

HISTORY

Jayne McKenzie, Manager of the Kilcoy Indoor Sport Centre and Toogoolawah Community Gym, came to Kilcoy in 1987 for a visit and never left!!!!!!

The Somerset Health Fitness and Weight Loss Centre (formerly Somerset Health Fitness and Yoga) was quite accidentally launched in 2008. At that time the owner/founder Jayne McKenzie was employed as a Disability Officer/Medical Incapacity Officer for government, a Fitness Program provider for Fernwood Ladies Fitness at Caboolture and also operating several fitness classes in Kilcoy in rented premises.

Jayne eventually built a Studio/Gym on her premises to be used for her own personal gym and fitness use, but through a chain of events, she decided to transform it into a ‘small’ fitness centre and never looked back.

Jayne with her business awards

Jayne left her Government position in 2009 and decided to dedicate her time to building Somerset Health and Fitness into a great fitness centre for the benefit of all the community – but this has always been challenged by the small size of the premises and tucked away location. With Jayne and her awesome team great emphasis has always been placed on ‘giving back’ to the community of Somerset. We may have been small but we certainly delivered great results.

Somerset Health Fitness and Weight Loss Centre found many challenges with limited space at the home studio and also, with rented premises in Toogoolawah, having to ‘drag’ equipment out of storage every class.

Jayne has always prided herself on totally engaging with the Somerset community from a local and ‘grass roots’ level. This meaning she is totally accountable and committed to her home base from a ‘home base’ placement. So when the tender was advertised for the Kilcoy Indoor Sport Centre and Toogoolawah Community Gym she thought ‘this is for us’.

Once she secured to commitment and dedication from Wendy and Trish, she poured everything she had from her heart and from her life journey into securing the facilities and well……… the rest is history.

Jayne was the winner of QRRRWN Small Business Award and also runner up of QRRRWN Business Women of the Year 2018.

Jayne’s business is also the first business in the whole of Queensland to complete a very strict audit and accreditation by Fitness Australia.

2022 JOUURNEY

As the new community gym was being built I was informed that the gym and swimming pool were going to be a combined business.  So I quickly got my act together and did my Cert III and Cert IV with SPASA and also Royal Life Saving in Swimming Pool and Spa Services.  I also then realised that I would need a Pool Plant Operators Licence and qualifications, so I actually did that one twice.  But nothing beat hands on experience, in my opinion, so I was fortunate enough to meet Cass, the ex-Manager of the Burpengary Swimming Pool and she took me under her wing, where I gained the much needed knowledge to really do this job.

I completed my Aqua Zumba Course and then I completed my Learn to Swim course and I am still going and so are my staff.   Our aim is offer you the best in fitness, health, swimming and more.

All our staff are fully qualified and all hold Blue Cards.  Your safety and enjoyment at these facilities is important to us.
